Medical school professor nabbed peddling date-rape drug dubbed ‘coma in a bottle’: cops

University Professor Arrested for Allegedly Trafficking Date-Rape Drug

A medical professor from the University of Miami has been arrested on charges related to the trafficking of a substance known as GHB, often referred to as "liquid ecstasy" and "coma in a bottle."

Dr. Dairon Garcia, 44, faces serious allegations after authorities connected him to a package intercepted at Miami International Airport that contained approximately 15 pounds of gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB). This substance is classified by the DEA as a date-rape drug.

During his arraignment, Miami-Dade Judge Mindy Glazer expressed disappointment, stating, “He should be so embarrassed being here. He’s a medical doctor, committed to helping people, and now faces arrest for this.” She wished him luck as he navigates the legal process.

Dr. Garcia, who serves as an assistant professor of clinical radiology at the UM Miller School of Medicine, joined the faculty in 2022 after graduating from Duke University’s medical school.

The charges originated from a package sent from Paris, France, which was addressed to a property owned by Garcia. Customs officials intercepted the package on August 29, prompting an investigation by Miami police, following a tip from the Department of Homeland Security. When the package was delivered on September 12, it was collected from the doorstep by a woman.

After conducting a raid on the residence, police learned from the woman’s daughter that Garcia had instructed her to receive the package on his behalf. Additionally, another resident reported receiving a separate package for Garcia on September 7, and another package addressed to his business was intercepted on September 25.

The investigation continues as authorities work to unravel the full extent of the situation.
